Davidson County Deputies Say A 67-Year-Old Man Assaulted His Wife, Fired At Two Family Members And Fled Into A Wooded Area Near Hartman Road
DEPUTIES RESPOND TO ASSAULT AND SHOTS-FIRED REPORT
A Lexington man was taken into custody Tuesday morning following an alleged domestic assault and an overnight manhunt involving specialized units from the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at approximately 4:58 p.m. Monday, September 21, to a home at 1493 Hartman Road in Lexington after receiving a report of an assault and shots fired.
Investigators identified the suspect as 67-year-old Kevin Spaugh Sr. of Lexington.
According to the sheriff’s office, Spaugh allegedly struck a female family member with the handle of a hammer and strangled her during the assault. Authorities later identified the injured woman as Spaugh’s wife.
Her injuries were described as not life-threatening.
TWO OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS ALLEGEDLY FIRED UPON
Investigators said Spaugh then pointed a firearm at two other family members and fired at them.
Neither person was struck by the gunfire, according to authorities.
The sheriff’s office has not publicly released additional information about what allegedly led to the confrontation or how many shots were fired.
SUSPECT FLEES INTO WOODED AREA
Deputies said Spaugh left the home on foot and entered a nearby wooded area before officers could take him into custody.
Law enforcement established a perimeter and began a large-scale search that continued overnight.
The operation was led by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team and Drone Team. Detectives with the agency’s Criminal Investigation Division obtained arrest warrants while the search was underway.
Officials have not publicly explained how deputies ultimately located Spaugh.
ARREST MADE TUESDAY MORNING
Deputies arrested Spaugh without incident at approximately 6:41 a.m. Tuesday, the morning after the initial call.
He was transported to Lexington Medical Center before his expected transfer to the Davidson County Detention Center.
At the time of the sheriff’s office announcement, authorities said Spaugh was expected to be booked without bond. Any subsequent bond decision was not included in the available reports.
MULTIPLE ASSAULT CHARGES REPORTED
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office reported the following charges against Spaugh:
- Felony assault by strangulation
- Two counts of assault by pointing a gun
- Two counts of assault with a deadly weapon
- One misdemeanor charge described by authorities as a “crime of domestic violence”
The sheriff’s announcement did not identify a specific North Carolina statute for the misdemeanor domestic-violence-related charge.
All charges are allegations. Spaugh is presumed innocent unless and until he is convicted in court.
OVERNIGHT SEARCH ENDS WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT
The reported confrontation resulted in a law-enforcement operation that lasted through the night and involved patrol deputies, detectives, emergency-response personnel and drone operators.
Although two people were allegedly fired upon, authorities said no one was struck by the gunfire. Spaugh’s wife was the only injured person identified in the initial reports, and her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about the investigation.
